Interview with Academia.edu’s Richard Price

From this week’s Radio Berkman podcast, David Weinberger interviews Richard Price, founder of academia.edu.

I think we’re moving towards a world where people won’t be spending money on sharing their research content, they won’t be spending money on consuming their research content. The peer review, as it always has been, will be done for free. The sharing will be done for free. And the networks that support that process will be sufficiently low-cost and implemented by technology that you’ll be able to make money, much like Facebook and Twitter do, without charging the user. That’s broadly my thesis. I think that open access journals will fall by the wayside as much as closed access journals and I think the journal will become a thing of the past.
