Directions to campus code snippet

Another (potentially*) really handy bit of code from Google, this allows you to embed a form in your contact us/directions information allowing users to get directions from google maps to your specified location. My example below gives directions from any address to Southampton University:

You can specify a multiple choice for end locations.

*Unfortunately, I’d choose against using this at the moment as it seems to have problems with uk postcodes, I can’t imagine this remaining an issue for long.

Google Images has added the option to search for images specifying a creative commons licence. This provides a much wider range of images to  choose from, although I’d be extra careful about checking the licenses with images before using them.

Spezify – visual search engine

by Billy

Well ‘decision engine’ Bing and ‘computational knowledge engine’ Wolfram Alpha left me underwhelmed but new ‘visual search engine’ Spezify is great fun.

Above is a grab of the results for ‘newcastle university’, although the results update gradually, have a look yourself to see the effect.

The quote in the title of this post comes from Alex Williamson, former Publishing Editor of the British Medical Journal, in today’s Guardian – Editor quits after journal accepts bogus science article.

Embed Google Books pages easily

by Billy

It’s been possible to embed pages from Google Books using an api previously, but in their latest updates Google Books have made it possible to easily embed  Google Books in the same way as embedding a YouTube video or a google map. In the example above, I’ve also selected the page that the embed opens on.

Survey – investigation into the management of website content

by Billy

A request from the efoundations blog for anyone involved in online content management in UK higher education to complete their survey – Investigation into the management of website content in higher education institutions. It took me a good 20 minutes to fill it in, but the questions were thought-provoking and I look forward to the publication of the report in time for the Institutional Web Managemant Workshop at the end of July [booking closes tomorrow, 19 June 2009, apparently].

Oxford University’s video Wall of 100 Faces

A great new project from Oxford, Wall of 100 Faces is a videowall with 100 short videos introducing a range of students at the university. It’s taken eight months to put together and there’s an interesting video on the wall with producer Hannah Madsen describing the background and processes (no direct link to individual videos unfortunately, Hannah’s video is the last, in the bottom right hand corner).

Why use Google Apps for Education – free web seminar

A growing number of US universities and the University of Sunderland are already using Google Apps for Education to deliver email, instant messaging, calendars and document collaboration.

Next Thursday, 25 June 2009, Google are delivering a free live Google Apps for Education webinar (10am PDT which I think is 6pm British Summer Time)

iTunesU given a higher profile on iphone 3.0

2009 June 17
by Billy

There’s a lot of excitement about the iphone finally getting cut and paste and the ability to do such mobile basics as picture messaging and contact sending/receiving, but it’s great to see iTunesU getting a much higher profile on the latest version of the operating system.

For the first time you can now access iTunesU directly through the phone, with Warwick University the first option on the homepage when I tried it. Expect to see usage rise over the next few months, although with such limited screen estate, it’s going to be more important than ever to build good relations with Apple and get those high profile feature spots.
